Baseball

Baseball is a great game. I love watching baseball, playing (softball), listening to the game on the radio, being at the ballpark. It’s a storied game with a proud history.

I went to the Cardinals Reds game on the Fourth of July. It had been raining on and off most of the morning, it never really rained at the park, but this beautiful rainbow formed. I didn’t have my tripod, but I snapped this handheld HDR shot that still turned out well.

This photo is dedicated to the second All-Star game victory by the national league in as many years.

St. Louis Zoo

I went to the St. Louis Zoo over the weekend. It is a fun place with free admission. I took a number of pictures there which I’ll be posting over the next few weeks/months.

This first one was taken of an underwater hippopotamus. There were 4 or so of them all clustered together sleeping. They would raise their large heads up out of the water to breath through their nostrils every so often.

I snapped a few pictures while this one was breathing.

In order to get this shot of the hippo underwater, I hopped the paddock fence and jumped in the pond.

Just kidding!

That would be very dangerous, and even worse, ruin my camera. Don’t do it!

It isn’t even necessary.

There are windowed observation decks below the waterline so you can look at the submerged hippos from a safe and dry location. I highly recommend a visit to the St. Louis Zoo, especially if you have kids!

St. Louis

I have a lot of good memories in this town. There is a part of me that still gets giddy like a little kid when I drive down I-64 through the City.

If you’ve taken 64 into St. Louis, you may have noticed a large green dome to the West-Northwest.

It is the Cathedral of Saint Louis. It is very big and very beautiful with an absurd number of mosaics. I went there a few weekends back.

After mass a number of people stuck around to take pictures with mostly hand held point-and-shoot cameras. At most a small flash will basically do nothing to improve your photos in a large, relatively dim space. You really need a tripod.

I actually had one guy come up to me and ask if I was a photographer working at the church, kinda like those photographers at Disneyland I guess. I told him “no” but I took a picture of him with his camera. I’m a nice guy like that.
